Senior Patent Lawyer

The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years’ experience as a registered patent attorney in the US and have extensive experience in handling patents, trade secrets, and IP transactions in the US and abroad. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the fields of biochemistry and/or molecular biology in the US, and foreign jurisdictions. An advanced degree in the same or closely related discipline is preferred. Experience preparing invalidity and non-infringement memoranda and opinions, and drafting scientific collaboration agreements and sponsored research agreements with third parties is required. Excellent communication skills to advise business executives and senior scientists on legal issues related to patents, trade secrets, and the protection of intellectual property is required. Experience managing outside counsel and patent litigation a plus.



The Senior Patent lawyer reports to Chief IP Counsel of the Archer Daniels Midland Company, a fortune 50 agricultural processing company that transforms agricultural feedstocks into food ingredients, industrial chemicals, animal feed ingredients and products for human and animal health and nutrition. Ideally, the candidate will be located in Illinois, but remote locations will be considered.. The company’s technology is broad, ranging from the chemical transformation of agricultural feedstocks into specialty or industrial ingredients, probiotics, nutrient formulations and genetic engineering of microorganisms for industrial fermentation. Will be responsible for patent prep and prosecution primarily in the areas of biochemistry and molecular biology, for advising, negotiating and drafting collaboration agreements, sponsored research agreements and other transactions where potentially patentable intellectual property will be developed. Will advise senior scientists and business executive on issues of non-infringement and patent invalidity and may draft memoranda related to the same. Will manage outside patent counsel in all of the above where outside counsel is engaged, including managing patent litigations that may be district court or administrative procedures.
